A modern translation
The goal of this conceptual project was to create a book cover for Homer's Iliad that supported the themes of the text.
A key aspect of the Iliad is the influence of the Olympian gods on the events that take place as they intervene to support their favored warriors. To reflect this, I chose to place a statue upon a chess board. The statue highlights the narrative's place in history as one of the oldest works of literature, while the chess board suggests the characters are game pieces being affected by an external player.
Negative space was utilized to give the design a sense of weight and importance, further emphasizing the poem's significance in literature and human history. The use of negative space also reflects modern design, underscoring this specific publication as a "modern" translation.
